Remote ID Requirements Explained: A Quick Guide

Remote ID Requirements Explained

Remote ID is the ability of a drone to provide identification and location information that can be received by other parties. As of September 2023, most drones operating in US airspace must comply with Remote ID requirements.

Compliance Options

Operators have three ways to comply with Remote ID. Standard Remote ID drones have built-in broadcast capability from the manufacturer. Remote ID broadcast modules can be added to existing drones. Finally, operations within FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs) don’t require Remote ID equipment.

What Gets Broadcast

Remote ID broadcasts include the drone’s unique identifier, location, altitude, velocity, control station location, and time mark. This information helps identify drones and their operators for safety and security purposes.

Enforcement

The FAA actively enforces Remote ID requirements. Operating without proper Remote ID equipment outside of FRIAs can result in certificate action, fines, or both. Ensure your equipment is properly configured and functioning before each flight.
